One of the most exciting announcements in pop culture comes from the Cannes Film Festival, and of course Rihanna is part of the big news story. Entertainment Weekly announced that Netflix has nabbed a film project pairing Grammy winner Rihanna with Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, in a concept that began as a Twitter sensation.
Can we all come together and hug because Twitter has come together and produced an amazing movie idea. Oh and did I mention that Ava DuVernay, who directed Selma and Issa Rae (Insecure) is writing the screenplay. With these powerful woman onboard for this project our hearts are melting.
According to sources, Netflix landed the project in a very aggressive bid, beating out multiple other suitors. Netflix had no comment. Cross your fingers that Netflix is taking this concept and running with it.
For people that have not heard about this Twitter made project, the concept originates from a photo of the two celebrities back in 2014 at the Miu Miu showduring Paris Fashion Week. Soon after, the photo inspired comments on Tumblr that proposed a heist movie in which Rihanna and Nyong’o scam the rich out of their money:
Nyong’o acknowledged a tweet about the potential film, writing, “I’m down if you are @rihanna.” Rihanna responded, “I'm in Pit’z.”
This is that best decision to triumph for black women in film both behind and in front of the camera. So, If you didn't get hype when this was boiling up on Twitter please don't rain on the parade. All four women are big names in entertainment, and their name recognition coupled with the ongoing call to see more women of color in film will draw both critical attention and audiences to see how well the project plays out.
The movie is slated to begin production next year. This is, perhaps, the best thing Twitter has ever done for us. DuVernay seems to have confirmed the news on Twitter.
Stay tuned guys, we will be keeping an eye out on this topic!
